Chatting with Hayley Mitchell

I found Hayley on Instagram a few months ago and instantly fell in love with her fabulous faces.  Obviously everyone else found her around the same time, because she has gained quite a following.  If you don't follow her yet, check her out.  Not only does she post great snaps of her art, but cute shots of her little family.

1.) Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am 27 years old/wife/ mother to 3 little kids (4,3, 18 months). I am obsessed with pasta, interior design, antiques, art, and travel. We live in Austin, Texas where I work from home and take care of my littles.

2.) What is your artistic background?

I studied graphic design at ACU but left for love a year short of completing my degree. My family is filled with creatives! My grandmother is also an artist and has encouraged me since childhood. I spent many hours working with her in her studio. She helped me to overcome a serious case of perfectionism (especially in regard to my artwork).

3.) How did you get your start as an artist?

I've been creating works for years but felt uncomfortable with the idea of selling and sharing my work with others. Basically it came down to a fear of rejection. However, with the encouragement of family and friends, I finally decided to start selling my work.

4.) You are a Mom too- how do you handle the work/life balance?

The work/life balance is a real challenge especially since they are so intertwined. I try to be available first and foremost to my kids. I tend to work when they are in bed or engaged in an activity. Sometimes they paint while I paint which is also the reason there is paint everywhere in my home. I've learned to let go of things like OCD style cleaning and gourmet cooking every night.

5.) What are you most known for?

My faces and bathers.

6.) What have you done/has happened to help you get your work out there?

Etsy and Instagram have been awesome tools to reach those that might not have seen my work otherwise.

7.) What is the best advice you can give to a new artist?

Don't give up. Ask for feedback from artist you respect and admire. Give back.

8.) How did you decide to add prints to your art selection?

I decided to add prints because I know not every budget allows for an original. I try to gauge what pieces generate the most interest and invest in prints.

9.) What do you want to happen with your art this year?

I hope my work continues to gain interest and continues to evolve. It is always fascinating to look back at the years end and see how my work changed within a year.

10.) What about in the next five years?

In the next 5 years I hope to still be doing what I love. I'd love to eventually create a textile line. That is my dream!
